Private Daniel Carney, 2nd Battalion, Highland Light infantry. He was killed in action near Zonnebeke, Belgium, aged 27, on the 1st November 1914 during the First Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Patrick and Isabella Carney of 61 Queen Street, Galashiels. He had been employed as a mill worker when he enlisted as a Regular soldier in 1904 and served in India. In 1907 he was transferred to the reserves and as a Reservist he was mobilised in August 1914. going to France in August. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
