Private Andrew Blake

Private Andrew Scott Blake, 1st/4th (Border) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds in Palestine, aged, 26, on the 10th May 1917 and is buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. He had been born in Hawick and was the son of Andrew and Christina Blake of 80 Channel Street and 46 Galapark Road, Galashiels. He joined the Battalion in Egypt and served in Palestine where he was badly wounded. He died in the 31st General Hospital Port Said. It is likely he was wounded on the 19th April 1917 in the attack on the Turkish positions on “Outpost Hill” which cost the Battalion 6 Officers and 44 Other Ranks killed and 9 Officers and 152 Other Ranks wounded. The photos show the Borderers in Palestine in 1917. His Headstone is inscribed ” In Love He Lived In Peace He Died His Life We craved But God Denied”.
