Lance Corporal Thomas Slight Arnott, 95th Company, Machine gun Corps. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 30, on the 3rd October 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Glasgow and was the son of the late George and Janet Arnott of Galashiels. He had been living and working in Glasgow as a barman when he enlisted in the 4th K.O.S.B. in August 1914 going to Gallipoli in June 1915. On Gallipoli he was posted to the 1st/8th Scottish Rifles where he was wounded and evacuated home. Upon recovery he was posted to the M.G.C. and went to France in August 1916. He is buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium. the photos show the atrocious conditions of the battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the fragile Flanders drainage system.
