Lance Corporal James Daniel, D.C.M.

Lance Corporal James Dalgliesh Daniel, D.C.M. 2nd Battalion, Black Watch. He died from wounds in the Southern General Hospital, Oxford, aged 25, on the 6th June 1915. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of John and Alison Daniel of 3 Smithfield Street, Gorgie, Edinburgh. The family had moved from Galashiels to Edinburgh in 1901 and James had enlisted in the Black Watch in 1911 as a Regular soldier. The Battalion had been serving in India but went to France in 12th October 1914. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions on 4th November 1914. The citation reads” For gallant conduct on 4th November 1914 in carrying a wounded man into safety”. He was recommended for a second award for a similar act.ion in 1915 but died from wounds suffered during that event. He is buried in Bennochy Cemetery, Kirkcaldy
