Corporal Andrew Yeaman Bold, 6th (Service) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France, aged, 28 on the 3rd May 1917 during the Battle of Arras. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of John and Alison Bold of 2 Albert Place, Galashiels. Before enlisting he had worked in the Co- Operative Society in the Town. He fell in the disastrous attack on the German positions on “Greenland Hill” which took place at night on unreconnoitred defences. The Battalion penetrated deeply into the German lines but due to the flanking Battalions not fairing well were cut off and suffered heavy casualties. 6 Officers and 51 Other Ranks were killed and 3 Officers and 152 Other Ranks were wounded. In addition5 Officers and 200 Other Ranks were reported missing. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. The photos show troops during the Battle.
