Private Ronald Moscrop Smith, 6th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He died on Service, aged 21, on the 7th February 1941. He had been born in Berwick-upon-Tweed and was the son of Isabella Smith and the stepson of John Smith of Eckford. He was with the Battalion when it went to France in January 1940 and was eventually evacuated with the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk on the 1st June 1940. In September 1940 the Battalion was tasked to move to North Africa in April 1941. To prepare intensive training exercises were arranged on the moors of Somerset and Devon. During one of these Private Smith died and his death was registered in Tiverton, Devon. He is buried in Eckford Kirkyard where his Headstone is inscribed ” In Loving Memory Of My Dear Son, Abide With Me”.
