Private Andrew Armstrong, 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He died in France on 1st October 1916, aged, 25, of wounds received during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in St Sever, Cemetery, Seine-Maritime, France. He had been born in Eckford. The Battalion’s nicknames were ” the Fighting Tenth” and the “White Gurkhas”. The autumn rains had turned the chalky nature of the ground into a glutinous quagmire making all movement very difficult as the photographs show.
