Private Henry Duff

Private Henry Duff, 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry ( Central Ontario Regiment ) He was killed in action in France, aged 23, on 27th September 1918 during the capture of the village of Sains-Le-Marquion at the Canal Du Nord  and is buried in in Sains le- Marquion British Cemetery ,Pas de Calais, France. He had been born in Oxnam, Roxburghshire and was the son of Archibald and Helen Duff. He had served his apprenticeship as a draper in Earlston before emigrating to Canada in May 1914. Before enlisting he had been working as a salesman in Toronto.  He fell whilst doing his dangerous duty as a Battalion runner. The photographs show allied troops advancing after the retreating German Army during the ” Advance to Victory” during the final days of the War. The last colour photo shows Canadian troops in the Town of Mons after its capture in November 1918. This is where the British Army had fought its first Battle of the War on 23rd August 1914. The wheel had come full circle.
