Private Joseph Nelson

Private Joseph Nelson, 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. He died from wounds in France on 24th October 1918 during the “Advance to Victory ” aged 34. He had been born in Elphingstone, East Lothian and was the son of Joseph and Jane Nelson of Elphingstone, Tranent and 31 North Street, Duns and is buried in Awoingt British Cemetery, Cambrai, France. He had been born in Duns and had previously served in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and the South Lancashire Regiment before being transferred to the Cheshires. His Headstone is inscribed ” In Loving Memory Of My Dear Son Ever Fondly Remembered “. His photograph shows him whilst still with the K.O.S.B. The photographs  show Allied troops during the advance against the retreating German army in the final 100 days of the War.
