Flight Sergeant George Wheeler

Flight Sergeant George William Wheeler, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on an Air Operation to Stuttgart with 15 Squadron, Royal Air Force on 25th July 1944, aged 21 and is buried in St. Desir War Cemetery, Caen, Normandy, France with all his fellow crew members. He had been born in Bradford and was the son of Ernest and Alice Wheeler formerly of Teindhillgreen,of Duns and his Headstone is inscribed ” In Ever loving Memory Of Our Very Dear Son George. R.I.P. Mam And Dad “.  His aircraft ( LM142 LS-A ) piloted by Flight Lieutenant T.G.L. Reynolds was shot down over Normandy on the night of 24th/25th July 1944  with the loss of all seven members of the crew. A further 22 Aircraft were lost on this raid. 15 Squadron was part of Bomber Commands Main Force and flew the Avro Lancaster from R.A.F. Mildenhall, Suffolk in operations over Occupied Europe and Germany. He was educated at the Berwickshire High School, Duns and is also commemorated on the Memorial Tablet placed in the new High School, Duns.
