Flight Sergeant Andrew Nairn

Flight Sergeant Air Gunner, Andrew Swanston Nairn, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He was lost on an Air Operations with 640 Squadron, Royal Air Force on 6th October 1944, aged 22, attacking a synthetic oil plant at Holten on the Rhur, Germany. He is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany. He had been born in Duns and was the son of Andrew Nairn of The Mount, Duns. Before enlisting he had been employed as a grocer in Duns. 640 Squadron operated from R.A.F. Leconfield, Yorkshire and flew the Handley Page Halifax as part of Bomber Commands Main Force with 4 Group. His Halifax was numbered MZ925 C8-F and all the crew were lost. 5 of the crew were buried in Reichwald and 2 are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
