Private James Elliot

Private James Elliot, 1st/4th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 1st September 1918 during “The Advance to Victory” and is buried in H.A.C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, Pas De Calais, France. He had been born in Coldstream, and had enlisted and resided in Galashiels. However as he had been born in Coldstream we feel his name should be included in the Coldstream War Memorial section and indeed should have been commemorated on the Coldstream War Memorial. He fell in the attack on Bullecourt which was designed to clear the enemy to enable a wider attack farther down the line. This was successful and in the afternoon the troops took part in the wider assault towards the village of Queant. This unfortunately was foiled by heavy machine gun fire and the Battalion had to fall back to the captured “Tank Avenue” trench to reorganise. 2 Officers and 23 Other Ranks were killed and over 130 Other Ranks were wounded.
