Captain William Home

Captain William Home. Lord Dunglas Coldstream Guards.  He died in December 1781 in America, of wounds received at the Battle of Guildford Courthouse on 15th March 1781, aged 24 and is buried there. He was born on 27th November 1757 and was the son of Alexander 9th Earl of Home of The Hirsel, Coldstream. The Earl raised an obelisk in his memory on the Hirsel Estate on 1st November 1784. He is also commemorated on a Memorial in the Royal Military Chapel in Wellington Barracks, London. The battle was fought on 15th March 1781 in Greensboro, the County Seat of Guilford County, North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War. a British force of 1,900 men under Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis defeated 4,000 Americans under Major General Nathaniel Greene.
