Corporal John Court

Corporal John Walter Court, Royal Defence Corps. He was born on 17th January 1868 and died at Home on 10th January 1920, aged 51. He was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Court and the husband of Bessie Mathieson Court of 19 Market Street, Coldstream. He was a native of Fochabers, Aberdeenshire and is buried in Lennel Old Churchyard, Lennel, Coldstream. ( His name is not on the Coldstream War Memorial ). In 1911 John and Bessie with their 6 children were living in Leitholm John was a tailor to trade and before the War he had been a member of the Territorial Force with the Cameron Highlanders. Living in the Borders he was posted to the 2nd/4th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers ( a home service Battalion ).Eventually on 8th March 1917 he was posted to the labour Coy. of the Seaforth Highlanders and sent to France on 17th of that month. On 14th May 1917 he was transferred to the Labour Corps and was wounded in the leg on 31st July 1917. He rejoined his Unit on 8th August 1917 and was promoted to Corporal. On 27th May 1918 he was transferred to the Home establishment where on 19th June 1918 he was posted to 202nd Protection Coy. Royal Defence Corps. He was discharged from the Army on 18th February 1919.
