Captain Andrew Wallace

Captain Andrew Wallace 1/4th ( Border ) Battalion ,Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action during the “Charge” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah on Gallipoli on 12th July 1915 aged 40. He had been born in Prestonpans and was the son of James Wallace who was Headmaster of the Public School in Prestonpans. He attended George Heriots School in Edinburgh and studied medicine at Edinburgh University from 1891-1896 and graduated M.B. He became a doctor in Coldstream in around 1900 living in Orchard House, Duns Road. Before settling down he had served as ships doctor aboard the S.S. “Glen Avon” on the run to China and Japan and was wrecked on rocks off Hong Kong.  He joined the 4th K.O.S.B. Territorial Force  and became a Captain commanding the Coldstream Detachment in 1903. It was reported that as he lay mortally wounded he encouraged his men on by saying “Come on Borderers don’t be beat “. Out of the twenty Officers who took part in the attack eleven , including the Colonel and his Adjutant were killed and a further six were wounded. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was a prominent member of Coldstream and Hirsel Curling Club and his name is on at least one trophy which is still played for. He was also a member of Lennel Golf Club. The first photograph shows Achi Baba marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second photograph shows Borderers “going over the top” at Gallipoli and the third shows the battlefield in 1922. The Battalion was part of the 155th ( South Scottish ) Brigade in the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division. ( Two of his brothers also fell. Harold Wallace on 8th April 1915 with the Royal Scots and William Wallace on the 17th April 1917 also with the Royal Scots ).
