. Corporal John Wood, 4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He died from wounds on 9th June 1940 received in action in France. He was aged 22 and was the son of Peter and Euphemia Wood of Chapel Hill, Cockburnspath and Lintlaw, Berwickshire. He is buried in Arques-La -Battaille Communal Cemetery ,France where his Headstone is inscribed ” Thy Will Be Done” This cemetery contains 8 Seaforth Highlanders . His Battalion was part of the 51st (Highland) Division which was South of the River Somme and which had been forced to retreat in the face of the rapid German advances. It was proposed to evacuate the Division from Dieppe but had to surrender when surrounded at St Valery-en-Caux. He was educated at the Berwickshire High School, Duns and is also commemorated on the Memorial Tablet placed in the new High School, Duns.
