Lieutenant Christopher Cowan Thorburn, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in France on 14th June 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He had lived at The Bow, Coldingham and had been gazetted Lieutenant in January 1916. He fell in the attack on ” Infantry Hill” which was secured after a dash across open ground without artillery support. Counter attacks were repulsed and the Battalion was relieved on the 18th June. Casualties were 4 Officers and 38 Other Ranks killed and 7 Officers and 179 Other Ranks wounded with a further 17 posted missing. Most of the casualties were caused by artillery fire. The photographs shows British troops accompanied by a tank in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
