Corporal John Wood, 4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He died from wounds in France, aged 22, on the 9th June 1940. He had been born at Fishwick Mains, Hutton and was the son of Peter and Euphemia Wood of Chapel Hill, Cockburnspath and Lintlaw. Before enlisting he had been employed as a bakery vanman in the Coldingham area, Berwickshire. His Battalion was part of the 51st ( Highland ) Division but the rapid German advances forced the Division back towards the coast. It was hoped to evacuate from Dieppe but the Division was surrounded and forced to surrender at St Valery-en-Caux. Private Wood was mortally wounded in a skirmish near Dieppe and was buried with another 7 of his comrades in Arques-La-Bataille Communal Cemetery near Dieppe, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” He Giveth His Beloved Sleep”.
