Private Thomas Scott, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. He died at New Cove, Cockburnspath on 22nd November 1918, aged 28 and is buried in Cockburnspath Churchyard. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Andrew and Agnes Nichol Scott and the husband of Elizabeth Mills Scott of Cove Farm, Cockburnspath. He was a member of Melrose Rugby Football Club and had been working as a stone mason in Edinburgh when he enlisted in August 1914. He served throughout the War with the 2nd Battalion but was with the 1st Battalion when he was granted compassionate leave from France to visit his dying three year old daughter who died on 11th November 1918. Tragically eleven days later Private Scott himself died from the same disease. ( Possibly the Spanish Flu epidemic which was sweeping the World and killed many more people than the War itself).
