Lance Corporal Joseph Craik Nelson, 11th ( Service ) Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action in Belgium, aged 19, on the 26th August 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He had been born in Mawcarse, Kinross-shire and was the son of James and Catherine Nelson of Stockbridge Cottage, Cockburnspath. Before enlisting in June 1916 he had been employed as a gardener at Priory Lodge, St Andrews and he joined his Battalion in France in May 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. The photos show troops in the earlier stages of the Battle.
