Private William Bain

Private William Bain 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers He was killed in action in Palestine on 28th November 1917, aged 20. He had been born in Co. Durham and was the son of Mr and Mrs Bain of Station Road, Chirnside and is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery Palestine. Before enlisting he had been employed as a clerk at Hawick Railway Station. From the 25th till the 30th November the Turks counter attacked fiercely in the Judean Hills and the Battalion played its part in repulsing these attacks. The photographs show Borderers at Ramleh in late 1917. (The three soldiers are Willie Cockburn, Alec Lawrie and Jim Murray who all played football for Coldstream F.C. ). Jim Murray was part of the Coldstream team who won the Scottish Amateur Cup in 1925.
