Sergeant John Rae Nelson, 7th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed on 16th August 1915 in France aged 26. He had been born in Berwick-upon-Tweed and was the son of Mrs Christina Nelson and the late Mr John Nelson of Brewery Cottage, Chirnside and is buried in Pont-Du-Hem, La Gorgue, France. ( 7th Seaforths were part of the 9th (Scottish ) Division.) His Headstone is inscribed ” He Died For Us . His mother had received a letter from his company officer stating he had been shot in two places by a sniper and died within an hour. He had been a Regular soldier before leaving to join the Police Force in Sunderland and as a reservist he had been recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the War, landing on the Continent in May 1915.
