Sergeant John Rae Nelson, 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action on 16th August 1915 in France aged 26. He was the son of Mrs C. Nelson and the late Mr J.Nelson of Brewery Cottage, Chirnside and is buried in Pont-Du-Hem, La Gorgue, France. ( 7th Seaforths were part of the Ninth (Scottish ) Division.) His mother had received a letter from his company officer stating he had been shot in two places by a sniper and died within an hour. He had been called up from the Reserve being on the police force in Sunderland when the war broke out.
