Lance Corporal James Robertson, 1st Battalion, Scots Guards. He was killed in Belgium on 20th March 1916, aged 23. He had been born in Chirnside and was the son of Alice Robertson of Gunsgreen, Ayton and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. Before enlisting in January 1915 he had been employed as a farm worker at Ninewells Mains, Chirnside. (His obituary in the ” Berwickshire Advertiser ” has his rank as Corporal). He had been secretary of the Chirnside branch of the Red Cross and of the West United Free Church Band of Hope. At this time the Battalion were in trenches near Poperinghe in the Ypres Salient.
