Stoker George Fairley

Stoker 1st Class George Fairley, Royal Navy. He was killed in action on 27th April 1945 when  H.M.S. “Redmill” was torpedoed by U-1105 , aged 21. He was the son of James and Davina Fairley of Youngs Buildings, Chirnside and is buried in Chirnside Kirkyard. “Redmill” was a U.S. built Destroyer Escort and lost 60 feet from its stern in the attack off the West Coast of Ireland. She was towed back into port but was declared a total loss. 32 Crew were lost  On 27th March 1945 “Redmill” had assisted in the sinking of U-722 which was lost with all hands. Before the War he had been a grocer with the Co-op in Chirnside and was a keen footballer. He was the fourteenth local to fall in the War.
