Sergeant Pilot Frederick Thornber

Sergeant Pilot Frederick Aaron Thornber, Royal Air Force. He was killed in action, aged 20, with 91 ( Nigeria ) Squadron, Royal air Force on 1st July 1941 and is buried in Hawkinge Cemetery Hawkinge Kent. He had been born in Canada and was the son of Hugh and Annie Thornber and the foster son of Elizabeth Usher of Gladsnest, Teviothead, Hawick. He had arrived in Scotland in 1936 and had gone to live with Miss Usher in Teviothead. 91 Squadron was based at R.A.F. Hawkinge , Kent and flew the Supermarine Spitfire on weather reconnaissance and air sea rescue duties. His aircraft was reported missing on 1st July and his body was recovered near Dover five days later.
