Private Frederick Lee

Private Frederick James Lee, 22nd Air Line Section, 2nd Indian Army Corps Signal Company, Royal Engineers. He died on Active Service in Iraq, aged 21, on the 17th June 1916. He had been born in Keir, Dumfriesshire and was the son of Alexander and the late Elizabeth of Lister Lee of Yair, Caddonfoot and Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh. He had been working as a motor mechanic in Glasgow when in March 1914 he joined the Territorials as a Sapper in the Scottish Airline Signalling Company, Royal Engineers. He re-enlisted in the Regular Army in April 1915 and went to Egypt in August 1915. In April 1916 he moved to Basra but contracted Dysentery and died in the 41st Field Ambulance. He is buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq. ( The Air Line Section was responsible for the upkeep of telegraph and telephone wiring systems )
