Second Lieutenant John Watson, 17th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in France on 27th April 1918, aged 30, during the German Spring Offensive on the River Lys and is buried in Harponville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France. He was the son of Alexander Watson of Branxton and the husband of Jessie Watson of ” St Regulus Church, Haddington. There is a stained glass window in Branxton Church dedicated to the Royal Scots. The photographs show Allied troops in rather makeshift defences preparing to resist the advancing Germans.
