Corporal William Rutherford

Corporal William Rutherford, 2nd Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in France on 31st July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. He was a native of Berwick. On that day the Battalion were holding frontline trenches west of Mametz Wood and from there attacked German positions in an orchard. The attack was not successful and cost the Battalion 13 Officers and 244 Other Ranks. The photographs show troops on the Somme.
