Private Walter Hogarth

Private Walter Hogarth, Lothian and Borders Horse. He died in Macedonia on 13th June 1916, aged 25, during the campaign against the Bulgarians in Salonica. He was the son of Walter and Annie Hogarth of Castle View, Berwick and is buried in Salonica ( Lembet road ) Military Cemetery. At that time the Regiment was part of the 22nd Division which was then advancing from Salonica to the vicinity of Lake Doiran to carry out protective and scouting duties. Sickness was endemic there and malaria was rife so it is likely that Private Hogarth died from disease although the Battalion record does not say so. The photographs show the Regiment at Salonica.
