Private William Liddell, 5th Battalion, Tank Corps. He was killed in action in France on 3rd October 1918, aged 27, during the ” Advance to Victory ” and is buried in Bellicourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France. He was the son of the late John and Janet Liddell of Strathavon Cottage, Westfield, Bathgate and the husband of Georgina Baxendale Liddell of 11 Fetters Lane, Tweedmouth. He had originally enlisted in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers before transferring to the Tank Corps. He fell during the breakthrough of the final German defences in the Hindenburg Lines. His Headstone is inscribed ” Gone But Not Forgotten”. The photos show the Allied troops pressing after the retreating Germans during the last 100 days of the War.
