Private Oswald Sykes, 21st ( 2nd Tyneside Scottish ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in France by shellfire on 24th February 1917, aged 26. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Sykes of 16 West Street, Spittal and is buried in Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France. The Memorial shows his Unit as the N.C.B. which was the Northern Cyclists Battalion, a Territorial Unit which sent men to the other Fusilier Battalions. His brother David also died during the War.
