Private John Wood

Private John Stafford Wood, 21st ( Service ) Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment ( Prince of Wale’s Own ). He died in Belgium on 8th October 1917, aged 42, from wounds received during the Battle of Third Ypres. He had been born in Berwick and was the husband of M. Wood of 19 Elmer’s Drive Teddington, Middlesex and is buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Flanders, Belgium. The photograph gives some idea of the conditions of the battlefield. The fragile Flanders drainage systems had been shattered by the incessant artillery barrages and heavy rains had flooded the shell churned ground.
