Corporal John Smeaton, 9th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. He died in Malaya on 12th September 1944, aged 24, whilst a Prisoner of War of the Japanese. He was the son of Robert and Frances Smeaton and is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial. Many members of this Territorial Battalion had been captured at the fall of Singapore in February 1942.
