Able Seaman John Palmer

Able Seaman John Ormiston Palmer, Hawke Battalion, Royal Naval Division. He was lost at sea on 26th November 1915, aged 21, during the course of the Gallipoli Campaign and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.  He was the son of John and Agnes Palmer of South Doddington, Wooler and was a native of Langham Toll, Kilham, Northumberland. The Royal Naval Division was originally formed from Naval and Marine Reservists who were not needed for sea service. Later it was transferred to the Army and became the 63rd ( Royal Naval) Division and fought on the Western Front till the end of the War. The Battalion kept its Naval Ranks.
