Private John Knowles, 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died in a casualty clearing station in France on 12th May 1917, aged 38, from wounds suffered during the Battle of Arras. He was the husband of Ellen Knowles of 198 Main Street, Tweedmouth and is buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, Pas de Calais, France. Before enlisting he had worked at the woodyard of Messrs Allan and left a widow and two children. The photographs were taken during the Battle which was often known as the ” Scottish ” Battle due to the number of Scots Battalions (38 ) who took part. The photos show troops during the Battle.
