Private Hugh Dewar, 1st/5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in Belgium on 11th July 1917, aged 32 and is commemorated on the Nieuport Memorial, Belgium. He had been born in Berwick and was the son of Mrs John Ellis of 11 Roseburn Place, Edinburgh. He had spent his early years at Marshall Meadows and was educated at St. Mary’s School. In 1902 he had moved to Edinburgh and was employed by Messrs John Menzies, Publishers.
