Sapper George Grainger M.M.

Sapper George Grainger, M.M. ( possibly ), 69th Field Coy., Royal Engineers. He was killed in France on 13th October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme  and is buried in Longueval Road Cemetery, Somme, France. The photographs give an indication of the state of the battlefield after the autumn rains and the incessant shelling had turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today.
