Lieutenant George Hilliard Shields, Gold Coast Regiment, West African Frontier Force. He died in Tanganyika, Africa on 3rd February 1917, aged 39. He had been born in Berwick and was the son of Mr and Mrs Stewart Shields. He is buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania. His Regiment was part of the Force hunting down a German Force under General Von Lettow-Vorbeck which consisted of Germans and native Askaris and did not end until his surrender in November 1918. He had previously been a teacher at Holy Trinity School.
