Flight Lieutenant George Richardson M.I.D.

Flight Lieutenant George Sydney Richardson M.I.D., Royal Air Force. He was a pilot with 36 Squadron R.A.F. and was lost on operations against the Japasnese on 26th January 1942, aged 28. He was the son of George and Annie Richardson of Berwick and is buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. The Vickers Vildebeest was an obsolete torpedo bomber, based at Singapore and on that date an attack was made against a Japanese landing at Endau on the east coast of Malaya. The attack was described as a suicide mission and consequently the Squadron lost 7 aircraft shot down and two written off on return to base at Singapore. His Headstone is inscribed ” With Joyful Hearts We Tore Apart Their Flags In The Heavens Unfurled “.
