Private Frederick George Young, 2nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in the Ypres Salient, Belgium on 17th April 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres and is buried in La Laiterie Military Cemetery, nr.,Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. At this time the Battalion were holding positions in the Hill 60 sector and although in reserve were subjected to continual artillery fire. The artist’s illustrations depicts scenes from battle. Hill 60 was one on the most notorious spots in the Ypres Salient and it is reckoned that nearly 8,000 men lost their lives there most of whom still lie buried there.
