Sergeant Major John Charles Geddes, M.I.D., 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He died of wounds in Italy on 23rd September 1918, aged 31. After the Italian defeat at Caporetto by the Austro Hungarian forces in October 1917 some British and French Divisions had been sent to Italy to prop up that front. He was the son of Peter and Elizabeth Geddes of Berwick and is buried in Staglieno Cemetery, Genoa, Italy. He had also been awarded the Belgian Croix De Guerre for his service in action in Belgium. His Headstone is inscribed ” Greater Love Hath No Man Than This”.
