Lance Sergeant Alexander Welsh, ” B ” Coy.1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died of wounds on the Salonica Front on 4th September 1918, aged 27. He was the son of George and Jessie Wilson and is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery. Greece. He was a native of Berwick and was a Regular soldier having served 12 years with the Argylls in Malta and India and was sent to France on the outbreak of War. Later he was drafted to Salonica where he served with the signallers at H.Q. He had been cutting wire entanglements when he was struck by a piece of shrapnel and was severely wounded and died the following day. His Headstone is inscribed ” Until The Day Dawns And The Shadows Flee Away”.
