Lance Sergeant Alexander Welsh

Lance Sergeant Alexander Welsh, ” B ” Coy.1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died from wounds on the Salonika Front on 4th September 1918, aged 27. He had been born in Berwick and was the son of George and Jessie Wilson and is buried in Karasouli Military Cemetery. Greece. He was a Regular soldier having served 12 years with the Argylls in Malta and India and was sent to France on the outbreak of War. Later he was drafted to Salonica where he served with the signallers at Battalion H.Q. He had been cutting wire entanglements when he was struck by a piece of shrapnel, was severely wounded and died the following day. His Headstone is inscribed ” Until The Day Dawns And The Shadows Flee Away”. The photos show Scottish troops at Salonika.
