Private Alonsey Kirk

Private Alonsey James Kirk, 1st/4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Royal Scots ( Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles ).). He was killed in action in France on 18th August 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory ” He was married to a Berwick-upon-Tweed lady and worked in the town in the office of Home and Colonial, High Street. He was a native of Mexboro, Yorkshire and the only son of William Kirk who lived at Prospect Cottage, Mexboro. The Battalion was part of the 155th Brigade in the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division. He is buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, Nord, France. The photographs show the Allies going forward after the retreating German army during the last 100 days of the War.
