Private Alonsey James Kirk, 4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Royal Scots ( Queen’s Edinburgh Rifles ).). He was killed in action in France on 18th August 1918 during the ” Advance to Victory ” He was married to a Berwick-on-Tweed lady and worked in the town in the office of Home and Colonial, High Street. He was a native of Mexboro, Yorkshire and the only son of William Kirk who lived at Prospect Cottage, Mexboro. He is buried in Meteren Military Cemetery, Nord, France. The photographs show the Allies going forward after the retreating German army during the last 100 days of the War.
