Lieutenant Ian Souter

Lieutenant Ian Brack Souter, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was lost at sea aboard H.M.S.”Hereward” off Crete on 29th May 1941, aged 27. He was the son of Sir William Alfred Souter, R.E. and Lady Souter of Gosforth and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. H.M.S Hereward was an “H” Class destroyer completed in 1936 and weighed 1883 tons with a War complement of 146. She was sunk by dive bombers in the Kaso Stait whilst evacuating troops from the Island. 4 Officers and 72 crew were killed and there were 89 survivors who were picked up by Italian motor torpedo boats and made Prisoners of War.
