Private John Anderson

Private John Shaw Anderson, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action, aged 22, in Palestine on the 13th November 1917. He had been born in Ashkirk and was the son of Jane and the late Thomas Anderson and he is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel. He fell in the attack on the Turkish positions at El Mughar which fell after hand to hand combat. Hundreds of prisoners were taken along with artillery pieces and machine guns. Casualties were 4 Officers and 31 Other Ranks killed and 9 Officers and 138 Other Ranks wounded. The photos show Borderers in Palestine in late 1917. The three men pictured are Alec Lawrie, Willie Cockburn and Jim Murray who all played football for Coldstream F.C.
