Private James Waugh, 26th ( 3rd Tyneside Irish ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action during the Battle of Third Ypres on 14th October 1917 aged 26. He had been born in Waddington, Northumberland and was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Waugh of Howtel, Mindrum and had enlisted in Wooler. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium. At this time the Battalion were in the Front Line near Poelcapelle and suffered over 80 killed and wounded through enemy shelling. The photographs show the desolation of the Flanders battlefields where the incessant shelling had destroyed the drainage systems.
