Transcription

In affectionate rememberance of ROBINA  YOUNG beloved daughter of JOHN & MARY BOOKLESS who died 2nd July 1893 aged 10 years.

Also there Grand Daughter AGNES MARY GRAY LINDSAY who died 17th August 1908 aged 6 months.

Suffer little children to come unto me.

Also their son Pte WILLIAM BOOKLES 1/4 K. O. S. B. killed in action at the Dardalells 12th July 1915 aged 27 years.

Pte JOHN BOOKLESS 9th S Rifles who died of wounds received in action in France 1st November 1918 aged 21 years.

Thy will be done.

Also their daughter AGNES BOOKLESS who died 26th November 1931 aged 41 years.

Also the above JOHN BOOKLESS who died 6th Jan 1938 aged 85 years.

Also MARY HELEN who died at Marigold Duns 1st December  1944 aged 92 years. 

Military record

Private John Bookless , B Company, 9th Battalion, Cameronians ( Scottish Rifles ). He died in France on 1st November 1918, aged 24. He was the son of John and Mary Bookless of Swinton and is buried in Terlincthin British Cemetery, Wimille, Pas De Calais, France. 9th Cameronians were part of 9th ( Scottish ) Division. He had been wounded in action and taken to the 53rd General Hospital where he contracted Meningitis which proved fatal. He had already been wounded twice and before enlisting he had been employed as a rabbit catcher. His brother William Booklees had been killed in 1915 in Gallipoli.

 

Private William Bookless, 1/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action on Gallipoli, on 12th July 1915 during the "Charge"  on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah and is commemorated on thr Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He was living in Auchencrow but was a native of Swinton where his mother and father still lived. Before enlisting in December 1914 he had been a mole trapper in the district and he left a widow and two children. His only brother was serving in the 2/4th K.O.S.B but died in 1918 serving with the Scottish Rifles. He is also commemorated on the Houndwood Memorial.
