In the churchyard itself can be found a new stone commemorating Daniel Laidlaw, V.C. " The piper of Loos " who won his award on 25th September 1915 when under heavy fire he piped his comrades of the 7th Kings Own Scottish Borderers out of their trenches and into the attack on the German positions in the Lens Road Redoubts. Some few years ago the Medal was donated by family members to the United Services Museum in Edinburgh Castle. The ceremony took place on the old Loos battlefield and a Kings Own piper played the same regimental tunes that Piper Laidlaw played on that fateful day, " Blue Bonnets o'er the Border " and " The Standards on the Braes o' Mar ".
