Unto the honour and service of God, the parapet and roof of this tower were reconstructed in May, 1870, in token of the cherished memory of  OSWALD CARR, Captain in the Royal Artillery. He was born and brought up at Hedgeley,and he often expressed a hope that the tower of the parish church might be restored in its early likeness. He fell in action in the colony of New Zealand on the 8^th August, 1868, aged 31years. From a sum of military pay then due to their most dear s the work has been effected by his parents.
