Eglingham Memorials in the Church-Porch-Skull-Headstone/Cross Slab

Skull headstone

This headstone, carved in high relief, is resting against a wall inside the porch. The only signs of an inscription are two indistinct letters on the front of the headstone at the left near the top. The letters are possibly an “E” above a “T”.

At the top of the headstone, there is a human [female] figure standing on a cloud. In the centre, there is a skull-and-crossbones with a horizontal crescent moon above the skull. At the bottom, there is an hourglass on its side, hanging from a ribbon which has each of its ends threaded through a ring either side of the headstone.

Cross slab

This roughly square stone is resting against a wall inside the porch. There is no sign that there was ever an inscription on the front of it. The back is much too

rough to have had an inscription or any symbols.

In the centre of the stone there is a cross, with four equal arms, composed of four fleurs de lis. The cross is incised into the stone rather than carved out of it.
